Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Shanto produced half-centuries to lead Bangladesh to a win over Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by three wickets at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
With this victory, Bangladesh maintained their chances of qualifying for the 2025 Champions Trophy. They also surpassed Sri Lanka to take seventh place in the World Cup 2023 points table, thanks to a higher net run-rate. In fact, Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka for the first time in ODI World Cup history, having lost the previous three meetings between the two teams.
After being given the opportunity to bat first by Bangladesh, Sri Lanka were handed an early setback when Shoriful Islam dismissed the hard-hitting Kusal Perera in the opening over. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis put on a 61-run stand to keep Sri Lanka in the game.
Shakib Al Hasan broke their partnership in the 12th over, sending Mendis back to the pavilion. Nissanka fell short of his 14th ODI half-century when Mendis was removed, scoring 41 runs off 36 deliveries and striking eight boundaries. Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka shared a 63-run stand when Shakib dismissed Sadeera in the 25th over after she had scored 41 runs off 42 balls with four boundaries.

ANGELO MATHEWS , TIMED OUT
Angelo Mathews, the legendary all-rounder, was removed without even facing a single delivery after being timed out in New Delhi. Mathews became the first player in international cricket history to be timed out.
Mathews stepped in to bat at number 6 and had a problem with his helmet’s strap, which meant he couldn’t reach the crease in time, forcing the Bangladesh players to appeal. Following their appeal, on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth conferred and agreed to disqualify Mathews.
Following Mathews’ removal, Asalanka continued the attack to Bangladesh, where he shared a 78-run stand with Dhanajaya de Silva and completed his half-century. Mehidy Hasan Miraz ended their alliance before Shoriful dismissed Maheesh Theekshana in the 46th over.
Asalanka went on to score his first ODI World Cup century before being removed by Tanzim Hasan Sakib for his second wicket of the day. Asalanka finished with 108 runs off 105 balls, six boundaries and five sixes.
Sri Lanka’s tail failed to make much of an impact as they were bowled out for 279 runs in 49.3 overs in New Delhi. Tanzim was Bangladesh’s standout bowler, taking three wickets against Sri Lanka.
