The famous anime series Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (2015) successfully combines elements of two prominent anime genres: harem comedy and fantasy adventure.

The gods that once ruled over the city of Orario descended in search of entertainment, weakened their abilities, and started mingling with people. Every god created a Familia, a group of mortals devoted to creating weapons, battling monsters, and other tasks. Troops of explorers from different Familias roam the Dungeon, an underground maze full of creatures. As the Adventurers defeat more powerful monsters and find more priceless riches, their strength grows. Their power levels are indicated via interactive tattoos on their backs.

Bell Cranel, played by Bryson Baugus, is fourteen years old and embarks on solitary adventures since he is the sole member of the Hestia Familia. He is saved from an attack by a minotaur that is far too strong for him to handle by the incredible Sword Princess Ais Wallenstein (Shelley Calene-Black). The blonde heroine instantly captures his heart, but she’s too socially superior for a relationship to appear like anything more than a very nice fantasy.

Additionally, Bell must contend with the sensual brunette goddess Hestia (Luci Christian). She even manages to convince the formidable goddess Hephaestos (Stephanie Wittles), the “Lord of the Forge,” to grant him the enchanted “Hestia Knife,” which enables him to defeat more formidable opponents and advance his level.

Bell comes out as unremarkable at first, much like the heroes in many harem comedies: He goes under the monikers “Little Rookie” and “Vorpal Rabbit,” which are allusions to Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky.” However, similar to Tenchi Masaki in Tenchi Muyo, he is an exemplary great guy who is loyal, hardworking, kind, and well-intentioned. Like Tenchi, he has a modest exterior that hides a distinguished past.

The fan service moments are provided by the devoted Hestia, who frequently seems like she’s about to jiggle out of her thin shift. She sleeps next to Bell (no hanky-panky, please) and clings to him like a Band-Aid. Bell’s potential powers are perceived by Freya (Patricia Duran), who wishes to possess him. Bell and elfin waitress Ryu Lion (Genevieve Simmons) fell in love right away. As Bell stumbles through Orario and delves further into the Dungeon, he meets more people and unknowingly wins more hearts.

Occasionally called “DanMachi,” Dungeon derives its name from the Japanese novel Danjon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darō ka. It off as a series of light novels with illustrations by Suzuhito Yasuda and writing by Fujino Ōmori. The series’ fifteen novels have been translated into manga multiple times and have sold over nine million copies in just seven years. Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, a theatrical film, two Original Animation Variants, and a spin-off series were all born out of the three-season cartoon series’ overwhelming popularity. Orion’s Arrow (2019).

Is It Improper to Approach Women in a Dungeon? is not really a serious series. However, its clever blend of romance, adventure, slapstick humor, a naive yet charismatic hero, and a host of strong female characters have made it a beloved film. When COVID isolates them, otaku looking for something to binge watch will relish getting away from their all too familiar homes and joining Bell in the Dungeon under Orario.
