SHUBMAN GILL

After his outstanding performance in the Asia Cup 2023, Shubman Gill has closed the distance on Babar at the top of the ICC ODI Rankings for batsmen. This year, Gill has scored over 1000 runs in ODIs.

After the latest update on September 20, Wednesday, India’s new batting star Shubman Gill has reduced the gap on Babar Azam at the top of the ICC ODI Rankings for hitters.

Gill has had an outstanding ODI season in 2023. His performance in the Asia Cup 2023 was especially significant, as he finished as the top run-getter. In India’s final Super 4 game, he struck his fifth ODI century against Bangladesh, adding to his two fifties in the competition. This achievement was an important milestone in Gill’s career, as he became the 13th Indian to score 1000 runs in ODIs in the calendar year 2023.

Gill’s ODI consistency has been outstanding since he began opening the batting in ODIs in December 2020. His performance in 2023, on the other hand, was outstanding. In 17 innings this year, he drove in 1,025 runs with a 68.33 ERA and a strikeout rate of 103.32.

In addition to his 1000 runs in ODIs for the calendar year, Gill also reached 1500 runs across formats this year, with six hundreds and five fifties in 33 outings. His performance at the Asia Cup 2023 was critical to him reaching these goals. Despite a modest decline in form during the West Indies trip in July, which lasted into the Asia Cup, Gill silenced detractors with his outstanding performance.

Highlights

  • Gill finished the Asia Cup with the most runs.
  • Gill has scored the most runs for India in all formats.
  • Gill is still ranked second in ODIs.

With this, the 24-year-old has scored the most runs for India this year across all formats, and he is the only Indian hitter to have scored hundreds in all three formats of the game. Gill presently trails Babar by just 43 rating points in the latest update of the ICC ODI Rankings.

Before the Asia Cup, the Indian batter had begun to close the distance on Pakistan’s captain and now has a chance to pass him if he has a great series against Australia.
