The Indian women’s cricket team defeated Bangladesh by eight wickets to qualify to the finals of the Asian Games 2023, ensuring India a medal.

Bangladesh batted first in the match. They were unable to survive the aggressive bowling onslaught headed by Pooja Vastrakar, who took four wickets and bowled Bangladesh out for 51 runs. This marked the end of the first innings, leaving the Indian team with a comparatively low target.

The Indian squad headed to the field with a determined attitude as the second innings began. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma led the charge confidently. The Indian team remained unfazed after losing Mandhana early in the game. Shafali, noted for her aggressive batting style, was instrumental in the chase. She was eventually removed after scoring 17 runs off 21 balls.

Following Shafali’s dismissal, Jemimah Rodrigues took the field. Rodrigues and Kanika Ahuja kept the chase going with a strong partnership. Rodrigues’ batting prowess, paired with Ahuja’s assistance, enabled India inch closer to the mark.

Rodrigues, who finished unbeaten with 20 runs off 15 balls, was essential in India’s triumph. Her intelligent play and consistent performance meant that India handily reached the aim. Rodrigues hit the winning runs with only two runs remaining to win, capping India’s eight-wicket victory.

The Indian women’s cricket team, which has won 164 Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs) and 81 T20s, has once again proven their mettle on the international scene.

Following her outstanding bowling performance, the match also showcased the individual skills of players such as Vastrakar. Their eight-wicket win not only qualified them for the final, but also moved them one step closer to their first Asian Games medal in cricket.
