Neymar underwent surgery after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in Brazil’s 2-0 World Cup qualification loss against Uruguay.

Brazil forward Neymar had surgery on Thursday to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee, which he suffered while on international duty. The 31-year-old was forced to leave the pitch during Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay two weeks ago, and MRI scans revealed the extent of his injuries.

Neymar, who now plays for Al-Hilal, was treated at a hospital in Belo Horizonte by members of Brazil’s national team medical staff. According to local media, he is scheduled to be released on Saturday, kicking off his recuperation, which is expected to extend until mid-2024.

Neymar posted a snapshot of himself with his two children on social media with the remark, “Everything will be fine.”

We were very satisfied with the results,” said Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar in a brief statement.

“It went well.” He will be admitted to the hospital for another 24 to 48 hours, depending on his clinical condition.”

Lasmar stated that the next step will include rehabilitation and physiotherapy but did not provide a return date for the Al Hilal player.

According to experts, Neymar’s full rehabilitation might take up to eight months, potentially causing him to miss the Copa America in the United States in June and July.

Neymar moved to the Saudi Pro League in August for a rumored sum of 90 million euros ($96 million), but his stay there was plagued by a series of muscular ailments that limited him to only five games.
