Overview

Legends of the past describe four unearthly warriors who protected the land from successive waves of disaster by brandishing a sword, spear, bow, and shield. The kingdom of Melromarc calls upon these legendary individuals when the fate of the world hangs in the balance; in contemporary Japan, the call is answered, and the hapless heroes are propelled into this fantastical realm.

Otaku Naofumi Iwatani is thrust into Melromarc and given the title of “Shield Hero,” but because of his lack of offensive prowess and seeming inexperience, he is deemed the weakest. He only has one willing companion as the heroes split up to begin their adventures: the stunning princess Malty Melromarc. She soon betrays him, takes all of his money, and charges him with sexual assault, though.

Naofumi is labeled a criminal and shunned by society as a result of his claimed misdeeds. He starts out on his own, filled with wrath and a vow of vengeance against those who have mistreated him.

Context

The Rising of the Shield Hero is mostly an adaptation of the first five novels in Aneko Yusagi’s light novel series of the same name. While remaining more true to the first book, the second through the fifth novels follow different guidelines. For instance, events are rewritten, character personalities are altered, and new characters who weren’t in the original story are added.

September 1st saw the global premiere of The Rising of the Shield Hero anime’s first episode at Crunchyroll Expo. When the series premieres as part of the winter 2019 anime season, members worldwide will have access to the Crunchyroll co-production, with the exception of Asia.
