India vs. Sri Lanka, World Cup 2023: India defeated Sri Lanka by 302 runs in Mumbai to become the first side to reach the World Cup semifinals in 2023. Mohammed Shami’s second five-wicket haul of the tournament highlighted India’s dramatic triumph, which came after superb performances from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer.

India became the first team to advance to the 2023 World Cup semifinals after defeating Sri Lanka on Thursday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. India is the only undefeated team in the tournament and presently leads the points table with 14 points from seven matches.

After Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis, India’s 357 for 8 was led by Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88), and Shreyas Iyer (82). Then, Mohammed Shami guided India’s pace attack to a stunning 55-run victory over Sri Lanka. Shami surpassed Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath to become India’s greatest wicket-taker in ODI World Cups, and also matched Mitchell Starc’s record for most five-wicket hauls in World Cups. Shami took 45 wickets in 14 matches, while Zaheer and Srinath finished with 44 wickets in World Cups.

After Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah had rocked the Sri Lankan top-order, Shami needed just 5 overs to bring up his second five-wicket haul of the tournament. India’s 302-run win is their largest in one-day internationals.

After a terrible campaign in 2007, which ended in the group stages after shock defeats to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, India has now reached the ODI World Cup semifinals for the fourth time in a row. Four years later, India overcame Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium to win the World Cup, and in 2015, they were undefeated in six games to top the group, beating Bangladesh in the quarter-finals before falling to Australia in the semifinals. In 2019, India once again topped the table but were eliminated in the semifinals by New Zealand in a nail-biter.
