Australia won the sixth ODI World Cup on Sunday, defeating India by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After 10 consecutive victories, India were hot favourites to win the tournament, but Australia were far superior in the final, owing largely to a Travis Head century.
Australia won the World Cup for the first time in 1987, then three more times in 1999, 2003, and 2007. After losing in the quarterfinals to eventual champions India in 2011, Australia won the World Cup at home in 2015.
Australia lost their first two World Cup matches in 2023 to India and South Africa, but then won nine consecutive games to conclude one of their most memorable World Cup campaigns.
Australia has defeated India in the 2003 ODI World Cup final. Indian fans hoped for vengeance for the defeat 20 years ago, but it was not to be. After Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl, India’s batters failed to put up a fight. Rohit Sharma smashed a quick 47, while Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav had no influence. In an unusual partnership with Rahul, KL Rahul hit only one four in a 107-ball 66, while Virat Kohli, who scored 54, took his foot off the throttle.
Australia’s hitters, on the other hand, were extremely aggressive. Travis Head’s century was the highlight of Australia’s clinical chase, and he was well supported by Marnus Labuschagne, who produced a good half-century. Australia had fallen to 47 for 3, but Head and Labuschagne made sure there were no hiccups.
Australia got a flying start to their chase, scoring 15 runs off Jasprit Bumrah’s opening over. Despite the fact that Mohammed Shami bowled the second over instead of the customary Mohammed Siraj, Australia raced away to 28 for 1 at the conclusion of two overs.
Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in successive overs to dismiss Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith, increasing Indian hopes. Smith was smacked on the pads and walked off while requesting a review of the LBW ruling. Replays indicated that the impact occurred outside of off-stump, leaving Smith to rue his decision not to use the DRS.
Marnus Labuschagne, the same player who struck 163 for Australia in the World Test Championship final against India earlier this year, was the ideal man to play second fiddle to an aggressive Travis Head.
Throughout the 2023 World Cup, Travis Head was outstanding. He missed the first few matches owing to injuries, but he started the tournament with a hundred in his first match. Head smashed a quick half-century against South Africa in the semifinal; Australia stumbled a little in a modest chase but made it home, thanks in large part to the Australian opener’s bold start.
